There is a wide range of business models available to CSIRO.
In order to protect the interest of all parties, work is undertaken under some
type of written agreement that will be tailored to the type of work undertaken.
Terms and conditions for Intellectual Property ownership are generally agreed
on a project-by-project basis. Pricing models are also flexible within a "competitive
neutrality" framework. Funding will range from 100% internally funded through
co-investment to 100% commercial consulting. The mining automation team also
has convenient and seamless access to other CSIRO expertise. Here are some broad
categories of work:
CSIRO Strategic Research:
This research will generally be internally funded for strategic
reasons or because of the level of associated risk. It may be used to development
novel concepts to a stage where they can be demonstration or prepared for commercial
exploitation.
Collaborative/partnership Research:
This work is done together with a partner(s) from the industry
or other research providers (e.g. universities). Collaborations are naturally
created to improve the range of capability and to share in the risk and outcomes
of the research. Funding may come from a range of sources.
Contract Research:
This research is undertaken to achieve specified outcomes.
Often, CSIRO will work with the client to develop a proposal and specification.
For more complex tasks, a funded scoping study may be required.
Consulting:
While not a significant mode of operation, consulting work
may be undertaken where CSIRO has unique skills, facilities or access to technology.
Consulting is often useful to provide support for licensees.
Commercialisation of results:
Our results are made available to the industry through
a process of commercialisation that may range from a simple license arrangements
to spin-off companies and joint enterprise ownership. For all research a route-to-market
is considered at the beginning of a project.
Studentships:
Opportunities are provided for involvement of undergraduate
and postgraduate students in our research. Joint CSIRO and academic supervision
is usually provided. Limited scholarship and post doc programmes are also available.
Alliances & Partnerships:
Non-exclusive strategic alliances or partnerships are formed
to manage a range of research work in specialised sectors to provide a framework
for a programme of future research projects.
Working with Competitors:
From time-to-time specialised research may be carried out
for companies that are competitors. Mechanisms are established to maintain confidentiality
or other requirements to ensure appropriate commercial outcomes.
