The Mining ICT & Automation team is located in a modern,
purpose-built laboratory complex for the minerals and energy sectors (QCAT).
IT Infrastructure
Broadband network connection to all laboratory, office
and process bays with facility to connect to mobile equipment or experimental
rigs using radio networks.
Electronics Laboratories
Well equipped laboratories and equipment to design, simulate,
prototype and fabricate electronic circuits and computer assemblies. This includes
a shielded communications laboratory.
Automation Process Bay and Surrounds
Approximately 500 square meters of process bay is available
with full-length 10T overhead crane, two control rooms, vehicle pit, 200 kVA
power supply (3300/1000V) for mine equipment, mining robotics equipment. Various
vehicle platforms are available including lawn tractor and model helicopter.
This resource allows us to build realistic models of certain mining environments.
Mine Vehicle Test Track & Control Room
A full-scale test track has been built to simulate underground
mine roadways, including intersections, loops and slopes. The track is enclosed
with shade-cloth to emulate ribs (walls) and back (roof). It has a control room
equipped with full high-band communication system and a leaky-feeder mine-type
antenna. We also have a functional Load Haul Dump Vehicle (LHD).
Workshops - (Fabrication & Welding)
The QCAT site has a workshop with welding and machining
capability (including precision NC machine).
